Med-e-Tel is the International eHealth, Telemedicine and Health ICT Forum, taking place in Luxembourg on April 10-12, 2013. It is an official event of the International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth (ISfTeH), the international federation of national associations who represent their country’s Telemedicine and eHealth stakeholders. Med-e-Tel focuses on ehealth and telemedicine applications, a wide range of medical ICT applications, and on the convergence of information and communication technology with medical applications, which lead to higher quality of care, cost reductions, workflow efficiency, and widespread availability of healthcare services.

A Special Women and eHealth Session was held yesterday at Med-e-Tel, put together by the Millennia2015 Women and eHealth International Working Group. During this session, our new multilingual eHealth tool for maternal health, UniversalWomen Speaker, was presented by Dr. Jordi Serrano Pons. The session consisted of a series of discussion panels in order to design a global mapping of the roles and places of women within the arena of eHealth and Telemedicine. Following this session there was an official launch of the ISfTeH Working Group on Women (WoW). Our commitment to women’s health via the UniversalWomen Project

In December 2012, Millennia2015 and UniversalDoctor  announced a partnership to develop multilingual eHealth and mobile health applications dedicated to women’s health. This collaboration will result in the launch of UniversalWomen and UniversalNurse Speaker in 2014. With 484 experts from over 65 countries organized into regional communities and international working groups, Millennia2015 has a strong network of experts from which we will draw expertise from on women’s health and nursing issues to ensure these tools are relevant and well-informed.

UniversalWomen Speaker

Our UniversalWomen Speaker tool, part of the UniversalWomen Project, will facilitate multilingual communication between women and any healthcare personnel during pregnancy, childbirth and other maternal and women’s health issues. Whether you are traveling or working abroad, UniversalWomen aims to support any woman in need throughout the world.

UniversalNurse Speaker

UniversalNurse Speaker will be dedicated to supporting Nurses, enabling them to communicate with patients in several different languages. Nurses will feel more empowered to deliver care to patients in diverse multicultural settings. UniversalNurse Speaker will be tailored to meeting the needs of Nurses across the globe.

The concepts of UniversalWomen and UniversalNurse Speaker were presented at the Millennia2015 2nd International Conference at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 3 December 2012. Millennia2015’s main objectives are to reinforce and promote women’s empowerment and their full participation in political, economic and social decisions with respect to human rights and gender equality. Millennia2015 achieves this through prospective research and investigation; this includes a two-year study on Women, Health and ICTs and the intersection across these three domains.

2012 Year in Review of UniversalDoctor

2012 was a great year for bringing UniversalDoctor into the international arena with several new projects and platform presentations.

GHF2012

In April, UniversalDoctor was invited to participate in the Geneva Health Forum 2012, which focused on the critical shift to chronic conditions and giving a voice to the frontliners who are dealing with this on the ground. Our multilingual mobile applications were presented as tools to tackle chronic conditions in various medical settings where language barriers inhibit medical care. With 11 languages (and more coming soon!), UniversalDoctor Speaker is a handy tool for any traveler or healthcare professional working in multicultural settings.

In May, UniversalDoctor participated in the 7th Conference on Intercultural Communication, Public Service Translation and Interpreting, where we presented our project in the session on Communicating in the Healthcare Setting in 2012. Overcoming language barriers for effective healthcare communication and optimal medical care will continue to be our goal in 2013.

In September, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) of the UN held an ITU Experts Group Meeting on mobile health – “mHealth: Towards Better Care, Cure and Prevention in Europe“. This meeting was an integral part of the ITU European Regional Initiative on ICT Applications, including eHealth, and its aim was to share best practices, expertise and various country experiences on the development of strategies, policy and regulatory frameworks, and business models to foster mHealth development. UniversalDoctor founder, Dr. Jordi Serrano Pons, was invited to present on doctors’ perspectives on mobile health, data of mHealth usage in the medical field, and main barriers to adoption (full presentation). There were many excellent presentations, including addressing technology challenges in creating an enabling environment for mHealth by Dr. Alberto Sanna of San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Italy. The full agenda and all presentations from the meeting can be found here.

Health 2.0 Europe
In October, the Health 2.0 Europe 2012 Conference took place in Berlin and UniversalDoctor was invited to present our multilingual mobile application UniversalDoctor Speaker. The conference brought together hundreds of experts from over 30 countries to present their new Health 2.0 technologies and new digital health initiatives. For key highlights of the conference and more info about our presentation, see here.

And finally, in December we unveiled two new UniversalDoctor projects being developed in partnership with Millennia2015 at UNESCO in Paris: UniversalNurse and UniversalWomen. Both of these projects will have a strong focus on women and maternal health, and will also facilitate communication between patients and healthcare professionals (particularly nurses) on these issues using multilingual eHealth solutions. This is our first step towards developing a focus on women and eHealth.

We are also working very hard on New Projects and Partnerships in Switzerland, France, the United States and Norway so the year 2013 will also bring new surprises to many of our followers.
