SMS Diabetes in Gabon : Changing Diabetes, one SMS at a time
“Dealing with NCDs in low-resource settings is forcing healthcare professionals and local authorities to “think out of the box” and implement creative solutions in order to address the NCDs challenge in their countries. This situation led to the creation of a diabetes education and support platform fully carried through SMS, allowing information to reach thousands of patients and providing a reliable channel to ask questions about diabetes.
The SMS Diabetes project aims to address the challenge of the huge burden of non-communicable diseases, and the increasing difficulty to manage them in LMIC, where only limited means are available to support and care for a large amount of patients and a large scope of conditions. SMS Diabetes allows healthcare professionals to provide diabetes information and education to thousands of patients that have limited access to medical consultations. It also creates a constant communication channel with those patients, giving them the means to ask questions and voice concerns to their doctors, without having to wait until their next hospital appointment.”
